Detection of ß-Glucuronidase
activity is widely used to identify E. coli bacteria
contamination in food and water. The enzyme, which is encoded by GUS
gene, is also frequently used as a reporter gene in plants. Biotium
offers three chromogenic glucuronidase substrates, X-GlcU, Red-ß-D-gal
and Rose-ß-D-gal, each of which yields a blue-, red- and pink-colored
precipitating product respectively. The red and pink colors may be
easier to detect than the dark blue color of X-GlcU product in plant
cells. Biotium also offers the popular fluorogenic ß-glucuronidase
substrate MUG for ultra sensitive detection.
